Disco Safari: BOOT AND TAX - Fusci Ep - Optimo Trax
discosafari - BOOT & TAX - Fusci Ep - Optimo Trax

Boot & Tax return with their second EP following the success of the sold out "Acido" EP which received a multitude of plays from a plethora of djs in a profusion of discotheques.
These Milanese maestros deliver four dance floor delights in their own inimitable and distinctive style. Working across a range of tempos and incorporating more of Boot's great vocalising they also manage to weave a Jaw's Harp solo in there and make it seem like a potential replacement for the TB 303.
This also takes us to 50% of Optimo Trax so far being of Italian origin. We're not entirely sure how this happened but despite rumours to the contrary, we are open to releasing music from other countries within or outwith the EU.

Optimo Trax OT 008 is released on 12" and digital June 2014. Distribution by Kompakt and Rub A Dub.

Fantastic track by the famous french actress produced by Serge Gainsbourg. Nice lyrics, skanking guitar and this "seem to be pitched down" rhythm. This is the original but Ivan Smagghe did a dope edit of this on his self-released A few things from Ivan Smagghe compilation. (Press the "share button" to download the track)

Another Night on Earth: Press Play #75 - Asai
Japanese selector and producer Akihiro Asai aka Dj Asai drops in on a.n.o.e. with a drum heavy mix of serious quality. I first found out about Akihiro as one half of the edit duo Everybody Must Get Stoned or E.M.G.S. You can check them out on Soundcloud here, though you'll notice they haven't been all that busy of late. Back then i was blown away with their original take on things, i still am; some serious digging went down when putting their two 'Editors Must Get Stoned' ep's together. Long time readers will remember me ranting about them before, so i'll just add that they made a real impact on me.

Anyway Akihiro is probably better known these days as a resident dj for the fantastic Dawn parties at Grand Space Quark in Tokyo, where he has played alongside underground heavyweights like Kenji Takima, Dr Nishimura, Chida, Lee Douglas, the Idjut Boys, Shota Tanaka and Dicky Trisco amongst others... i mean, that's some serious cred right there. But 'Ese Ethno', his brilliant mix is all the convincing you'll need.... Huge thanks to Akihiro, i am honoured and very grateful sir. For the rest of you, grab this all styles gem, play repeatedly...

Leftside Wobble: Pocket Angel (2014 Rework) 2 million plays free download

I hit 2 million plays on SoundCloud this week so I wanted to give something special away. This was the first ever vinyl release I put out as Leftside Wobble and it has never before been made available as a digital download so grab it whilst you can as it won't be available for very long. It also happens to be the opening night of my new London residency tomorrow so you can grab the download over on the Acid Soul event page www.facebook.com/events/283799671796835/
Diddy Wah: The Rondels - Cover Charge
    The Rondels - Cover Charge

mp3: The Rondels - Cover Charge

The Rondels were a four-piece from Boston. Their first and best selling single was the drum-heavy Back Beat No.1, which I included on my surf inspired instrumental mix Mashi. I've also featured the brilliantly named Satan's Theme, the b-side of their second single, on these pages almost five years ago. Today, I'm back with The Rondels' fourth release, from 1962, the explosive Cover Charge. It's got everything one could hope for from a rockin' instrumental; a frantic beat, wailing sax and some guy sporadically exclaiming "Hey!".
Funk My Soul: Esther Phillips ‎– 1972 – From A Whisper To A Scream

Esther Phillips had a long and storied career and all of her recordings for KUDU have something nice on them, but this is probably the best one.  The credits for “From A Whisper To A Scream“, Esther’s 1972 Kudu debut – considered by many to be her finest album for the label – lists such renowned players as Hank Crawford on sax, Eric Gale and Cornell Dupree on guitar, Bernard Purdie on drums, Richard Tee on keyboards and Gordon Edwards on bass.  Also enlisting the cream of background singers (Joshie Armstead, Hilda Harris and Tasha Thomas) giving Esther just the right vocal cushion for her blues-tinged interpretations of works by everyone from poet/singer Gil Scott-Heron and the great Marvin Gaye to New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint and soul man Eddie Floyd. Disco Vinyl: THIS LOVE IS REAL VALERIE Mc NAIR an obscure Detroit dance effort
This scarce double A side came out on a private press label out of Detroit, Michigan called Real Rhythm Records.  On discogs.com there are only 5 listings for this label so it's real obscure.

The click's got that whole call and response thing going on and a bit of a rap.  So it sounds a bit more dated.  While This Love is Real is a bit more on the electro-freestyle tip.  They are both great and even though I'm selling my copy in my ebay store I'm gonna let you have a nice rip of one side.

Leftside Wobble: Leftside Wobble - Acid Tearz (Acid Soul Rub)

This unapologetic ode to that raw Chicago acid house sound has long been a secret weapon in my sets so I thought the time was right with the launch of my Acid Soul night in London to make it available as a free download. ;)

Diddy Wah: The Wailers' Mau Mau
    The Wailers - Mau Mau

mp3: The Wailers - Mau Mau
mp3: The Wailers - Beat Guitar

Here are a couple of tasty early-garage instrumentals. The Wailers aka The Fabulous Wailers don't really require an introduction around these parts. Mau Mau was their second single. It came from the same recording session as their first and biggest hit, Tall Cool One. As the title suggests, Mau Mau is somewhat exotic sounding. Like many groups who made instrumental rock'n'roll music at the time, The Wailers would have been well aware of the mega-success of The Champs' Latin tinged Tequila. Although originally released in 1959, my pressing comes from 1964, when Mau Mau was released as the flipside to Beat Guitar. Unfortunately, the label on the Beat Guitar side, which included a picture of the band, is missing on my copy. According to fellow 45 fiend, Wailers fan and future Heavy Sugar guest DJ, Colonel Spencer Evoy, this is often the case with those labels.
Leftside Wobble: Psychemagik - Black Noir Schwarz (Leo Zero Mix)

Diddy Wah: Bill Robinson, The Quails and The Cow
    Bill Robinson - The Cow

mp3: Bill Robinson - The Cow

Bill Robinson, a singer from Tampa, Florida, recorded with his group, The Quails, for several different labels. He toured with many of the early soul stars and, at times, sang lead in The Ink Spots and The Platters. Today's selection, The Cow, was released on American Records in 1963. It's an animal inspired dance-craze record. I imagine the accompanying dance involves motioning as if milking a cow, which is why it might have been confused with The Monkey.

The Cow, The Monkey and many more animal and non-animal inspired dances will be performed at the next Heavy Sugar club night. With special guest DJs Corrina Greyson and Colonel Spencer Evoy, we're going all out for dance-crazes and girl-groups. We're also enticing serious twisters down with a cash prize for the winner of the inaugural Heavy Sugar Twist Contest. So, make your plans now to head down The Alibi in Dalston on Friday May 23rd and be sure to don your best dancing boots.
My Favourite Sound Disco Blogspot: Funky Fusion: Side Effect's What You Need (1976)
Side Effect The birth of Side Effect began in the year 1972 with founder and leader Augie Johnson and members Lomita Johnson, Jim Gilstrap, Gregory Matta and Louie Patton. Sylvia Nabors did an excellent job on the first album, but by the time "What You Need" was recorded, Helen Lowe, now gospel superstar Helen Baylor, was the new vocalist. In 1977, Lowe was replaced by Sylvia St. James. St.
